"How to Do a Proper Handshake"
First impressions are important in a job interview. Your attire and attitude will be taken into consideration in the interviewers’ decision to hire you. Even the initial handshake will influence their assessment of the interviewee; therefore, it is important to know how to shake hands properly.
I have had the chance to shake many hands in Tokyo, but unfortunately, half of them were bad handshakes. Sometimes it was a limp handshake with no grip. At other times, I would shake a person’s fingers instead of the whole hand. When a handshake is limp, it communicates a lack of confidence or a hesitation to touch the other person’s hand.
To do a correct handshake, start by extending your right hand and hold the other person’s hand. Have the web of your thumbs meet and grip with your fingers. Your grip should be firm, but be careful not to squeeze too hard. Also, remember that eye contact is necessary, but make sure that you do not stare. Natural eye contact shows that you have confidence but staring will only make the other person uncomfortable. After gripping, shake your hands up and down a few times and release your grip. And don’t forget to smile! Congratulations! You are now able to do a proper handshake!
