（Vol.24） St. Patrick's Day

March 17th. Does this day have any meaning for you? If not, it should. This is Saint Patrick’s Day. A day of celebrating the Irish tradition throughout the world. It is a day where parades, festivities and being Irish for a day (for those not of actual Irish decent) are famous for attracting crowds of people claiming to be Irish.

On this day of celebrating what’s Irish and Ireland, green of the colour of choice for clothing. A shamrock is the decoration of choice for jewellery. And eating and drinking Irish cuisine is customary. Most if not all cities and towns in Ireland have a parade or festival; as for celebrations outside of Ireland: the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day parade is viewed by an average of 500,000 people every year. Chicago colours their Chicago River green in celebration of this event. And for many places the celebrations date back to the late 18th or early 19th century.

On Saint Patrick’s Day anyone can wear green clothes and hat (if you don’t then you may get pinched) often in imitation of a Leprechaun; a magical character out of Irish myth who is stylized as wearing a green hat and green clothes. (Leprechauns are known to be very small and very fast; thus they are hard to see. They also are known for hiding their gold in a pot at the end of a rainbow.) Children will search for the ever elusive Leprechaun in hopes of finding his pot of gold. Adults and elders will drink green beer and make merry. Parades are the gathering of choice for many Saint Patrick’s Day goers and let’s face it, everyone loves a parade.

So on March 17th what will you be doing? What colour will you be wearing? Do you think that leprechauns come as far a Japan to hide their gold at the end of a rainbow? I know I’ll be looking out for one.

セント・パトリックス・デイには、ほとんどの人がアイルランドの伝説の妖精「レプラコーン」のまねをして、緑色の服や帽子を身につけます（緑を着ないと、つねられます！）。レプラコーンは虹の先に黄金入りのつぼを隠しているといわれていますが、とても小さくてすばしっこいので、なかなか見つけることができません。子供達は神出鬼没なレプラコーンを必死に探し、大人や年寄りは緑色のビールを飲みながら騒ぎます。パレードにはたくさんの「セント・パトリックス・デイ」ファンが集まり、誰でも楽しく参加することができます！
