（Vol.26） April showers bring May flowers

In North America we have a saying: April showers bring May flowers. This is based on the loose norm of rain showers and precipitation in the month of April will bring, or encourage, flowers to grow in the month of May. Tulips, apple blossoms and many other flowers will soon if not already be blooming where I come from in Canada. This transition signals the start of spring even if there is still snow on the ground.

This year was the first time in nine years for me to see Cherry Blossoms in bloom, here in Japan. I first saw them in 1997 when I first came to Japan and then a second time in 1998. Since then I have always just missed seeing them bloom. Needless to say I took many photographs of the blossoms that I saw. I even went as far as hunting for Cherry Blossoms during my lunch hours. With camera in hand, I found some wonderful caches of Cherry Blossom scenery and was taking pictures left, right, and centre. I have a film camera, as I do not yet want a digital, and the pictures turned out amazing. I look forward to next year, when I can, once again, look for the perfect shot.

Now that the Cherry Blossoms have subsided to green leafy trees I am hesitantly looking onward to the rainy season here in Japan. This season I have experienced quite a number of times. As I wrote earlier I have just missed the Cherry Blossom season several times. I have come to understand that the rainy season in Japan is the introduction to the summer heat. Heat that I have found makes one’s appetite go into remission. Such heat making the time you are in a shower the driest place to be during the summer. I know that the rain is abundant and seems like it is never going to end. Yet my most vivid image of the rainy season is laundry always damp, even when it is ‘dry’.

So I guess while I am in Japan I should adopt the following phrase:April flowers bring May and June showers.Because it seems like it is the flowers in Japan that bring the showers and not the reverse.

日本語訳

4月のにわか雨が5月の花を咲かせる

北米では「4月のにわか雨が5月の花を咲かせる」といわれています。これは、4月のにわか雨で降水量が多くなり、5月に花が咲くという北米の気象に基づいています。私の故郷のカナダでも、チューリップやりんごの花などが満開とは言わないまでも咲きはじめています。まだ雪が少し残っていても、春が来たと感じる事ができる光景です。

今年は、9年ぶりに満開の桜を日本で見る事ができました。1997年に初めて日本に来た時と、その次の年に見て以来、いつも見逃してきたのです。言うまでもなく、写真をたくさん撮りました！ランチタイムでも桜を探したおかげで、素敵な桜を見つけ、カメラ片手に写真を撮りまくってしまいました。私はまだデジタルカメラにしたくないので、フィルムカメラで撮っていますが、我ながら素晴らしい出来でした。来年もまた最高の写真を撮るのを楽しみに、絶景を探そうと思います。

今では桜の季節も過ぎて葉が生い茂ってきましたが、日本ではこれから憂鬱な季節を迎えます。私は、何回も桜の時期を逃していますが梅雨だけは味わってきました。梅雨は夏の暑さの始まりですね！蒸し暑さのおかげで、食欲はなくなり、シャワーを浴びている時が一番乾燥していて快適だと感じるほどです。雨量は豊富でやまないように思われるし、何よりも、洗濯物がいつまでも乾かないというイメージがあります。

そういうわけで、日本に来てからはカナダの逆で「4月の花が5月・6月の雨を降らせる」のほうが合っているような気がしています。
