（Vol.30）　I feel like building something

I may work in an office environment but, to tell you the truth, I am an amateur carpenter at heart. I love to design and build things out of wood. Actually I made most of the furniture in my apartment. A table, TV stand, a dishes cupboard, a book case, a child’s chair, an outside garbage bin etc. Most of it is unfinished, meaning it has no paint or varnish on it. Except for one piece, the TV stand. I started the finishing (painting) with the TV stand because it was the smallest, and I stopped at the TV stand because it didn’t turn out the way I would have liked. So the remainder of my furniture is still in the rough state. The reason is because I don’t have the proper space to work on and complete my projects the way I would like to..

It occurs to me that very few husbands and boyfriends attempt such home projects or repairs. I once met a Californian living in Japan (John) who is married to a Japanese woman (Nami) and he always attempted to fix and repair any problems he has with anything in his house. If something broke he first takes it apart or tries to find out what is wrong with it. He told me that his neighbours think he is superman for even attempting such things. I found it odd at the time (as I was still quite new in Japan), but now I do not.

I see very few Japanese husbands or boyfriends tinkering with or trying to fix anything, let alone trying to do home building projects themselves. Quite often the mentality is ‘if it breaks then I will throw it out and buy a new one’. Or, I’ll just call the repair company. To me and I am sure many many other Canadians and Americans (and other nationalities too) would find this practice both wasteful and extravagant. Because to me, only the wealthy can afford to simply throw away something as soon as it breaks.

Just for your information, my next project is already on paper and will be finished by the end of the month.

何かを作る気分だ。

私は事務職ですが、私の心の中では、本当のところ気持ちは大工です。私は自分でデザインして、木で物を作るのが大好きです。実は今住んでいるアパートの家具はほとんど私の手作りです。テーブル、テレビ台、茶箪笥、本棚、子供のイス、ゴミ箱など。テレビ台以外は完全に完成していません。つまり、ペンキは塗っていません。テレビ台は小さいので、ＴＶ台からペンキを塗り始めたら、色などが好きじゃなかった為、他の家具は木のままです。本当の理由は家具を上手に組み立てて、完成するための作業部屋がないからです。

日本人の旦那さんや彼はこのような日常大工などをする人は非常に少ないという考えが私の心の中に浮かびます。日本に住んでいるカリフォルニア州出身のジョンは日本人の女性と結婚しています。ジョンは私の知り合いで、彼の家の中の物は、何でも壊れた時には自分で直そうとします。まず壊れたものを分解して壊れた部分を探します。自分で直そうとするだけで、「近所の人々は僕がスーパーマンだと思っている」と私に言いました。その時にスーパーマンだと思っている日本人の考え方は、ちょっと変だと思いました。

日本人の旦那さんや彼が、物を直そうとする姿をめったに見ません。自分の家の家具を作ってみようという姿も見ません。「壊れたものは捨てて、新しいものを買う」それか「壊れたら営繕会社に電話する」のような考え方が多い気がします。私（カナダ人、アメリカ人でもそうかもしれない）にとってこのような考え方はとっても贅沢と思います。なぜならば、壊れたものを直ぐに新しく買うことが出来る人は大金持ちだけだと思っています。

ちなみに、私の次のプロジェクトがすでに紙に書いてあり、それは今月中に出来上がります。
