（Vol.31）　Appearances can be deceiving

I often find myself forming opinions about someone or something within seconds of encountering it or them. Be it a co-worker, a new couch, a baseball mitt or a new shaving cream. In my native Canada, this can be quite problematic as drawing conclusions too soon is not always the best policy. This problem is compounded because one must cross cultural barriers all the time. My native Canada is very multicultural. And there are many disputes and misunderstandings because people have drawn too quick conclusions without giving thought to cultural or religious beliefs. Appearances can be deceiving.

Here in Japan, when I sit in a train station waiting for a train, or when I sit on an outside bench and watch people as they go by, I can’t help but wonder…I wonder what he does for fun? … or … I wonder what her hobby is? I think of my dad who is a Senior Director of his department and is directing people all day. He is involved in big decisions and has heaps of responsibility. If I were to look at him in his office environs I would never guess that he is a gardener. That he has taken landscape design courses. Or that he can fix the motor of a car. Again, appearances can be deceiving.

I talked about my passion in last month’s article. I mentioned how I am a carpenter at heart. But if you saw me on the street wearing a business suit in the Marunouchi district of Tokyo you would never know that I made most of the furniture in my house or that I like to do other handmade things, like knitting or cooking bread. Why is this? Because, appearances can be deceiving.

私は人（それか物）と始めて会った（見た）直ぐ後に、その人（物）についての意見を判断してしまいます。これは職場の同僚でも、新しいソファでも、野球のミットでも、新しいシェーヴィングクリームでも全て同じように判断します。私の出身カナダではこのような考え方は問題のある考え方で、判断するのを早まると、問題に直面します。特にこの問題は、文化の違いなどで多く見られるケースです。カナダは多文化で、カナダでの人の誤解や紛争はよく人と人との間の判断が早すぎて、相手の文化の違いや宗教の違いを考えないで判断してしまうことが原因です。人は見かけによらないですから。

日本で、私が駅の中で電車待ちをしている時とか、外のベンチに座って通っている人々を見ている時に、このように考えます。「彼は何が楽しいと思っているのかな？」とか「あの女の子の趣味は何だろう？」。私の父親がカナダで専務理事をやって平日はオフィスで働いています。重要な判断と重い責任を持っているでしょう。彼のオフィスの環境だけ見ていたら、彼の趣味は園芸と推測出来ないと思います。造園に関するコースを取得したことがあることも分らないかもしれません。他に、車のエンジンを直すことが出来ることも分らないと思います。何故って、人はみかけによらないですから。

先月のコラムに私の情熱の話を少ししました。私の本心は大工と書きましたが、ビジネススーツを着て、東京の丸の内で歩いている私を見かけたら、私の家の中の家具は殆ど自分で作ったことは分からないでしょう。他に編み物や料理のような手作りが大好きであることも分りません。それは何故でしょうか。人は見かけによらないですから。
