（Vol.33）　Clean it up

I understand that at the end of a year and before a new year starts that there is an intensive cleaning done on our homes, cars and offices. The so-called ‘Big Clean’. This is a big difference from where I come from.

Japan traditionally cleans every nook and cranny before the first day of the New Year. Although this is very good in my mind and is somewhat similar to practices in my home, Canada, it is the timing that is the big difference.　At home in Canada, winter is long. Sometimes it can be nearly six months of winter where I am from. Cold, snowy weather having very few respites in harshness. If we were to open our house to the elements by opening windows and doors to allow a big cleaning our homes would freeze in a matter of hours.　The cleaners that we would use to clean floors and windows would freeze in -30°C temperatures.

Instead we will intensely clean our homes twice a year. One time is in the spring, our so-called ‘spring cleaning’ and another in preparation for the oncoming winter.

For me the act of cleaning to welcome the New Year is a wonderful renewal and is refreshing; but as a Canadian who would not do so extensive a cleaning in the heart of winter, it is a little difficult for me to get motivated to do so in the cold.

Have fun to all of you who will do your ‘big clean’ I hope your feet don’t freeze like I know mine will.

掃除しよう！

日本では、年の瀬や年始の前にオフィスや家や車を徹底的に掃除します。この「大掃除」の文化は、私の故郷（カナダ）と大きな違いがあります。

伝統的に、日本人は、元旦の前までに隅から隅までくまなく掃除します。カナダも似たような習慣があって、良いことだと思いますが、時期が大きく異なるのです。カナダでは、冬がとても長く、半年間続くことはめずらしくありません。しかも、雪深く凍るような寒さで、穏やかな日は殆ど無いのが普通です。こんな中、もし年末に家の窓やドアを開いて大掃除しようとすれば、数時間で家が凍りつくでしょう。マイナス30℃の寒さの中で、掃除に使用する洗剤なども凍ってしまいます。

そんなわけで、カナダでは大掃除を年に2回します。‘spring cleaning’と呼ばれる春の大掃除と、冬になる前の準備の時期です。

私は、新年を迎えるために大掃除をするのは、すがすがしくて気持ちの良いことだと思います。しかし、真冬の大掃除をしないカナダ人にとっては、寒い中で大掃除をすることにモチベーションが上らないのが難点です。
