（Vol.35）　Of the law or above the law

As a stickler for rules and as a law-abiding citizen, I am often observant of the driving practices and habits of the people and places that I go. Are there good drivers? Aggressive drivers? Overly-cautious drivers? Or just plain bad drivers? I may have mentioned in a previous article that I started driving when I was 14. I have thereafter been a professional driver having a professional driver’s license from age 22 to age 29. Now I have a driver’s license in Japan.

Of late, I have started to relate the driving habits that I see as a representation of society. I may be mistaken but in my opinion drivers in my hometown are very aggressive and many of them seem to think they are race car drivers. They are not only the young but also the old too. My sister was on her way to a doctor when she had to change lanes. The vehicle next to her (yet further back) wouldn’t let her merge, yet she somewhat forced her way in so that she could make the turn at the upcoming corner. The car that wouldn’t let her in, followed her all the way to the doctor’s office and when she stopped the other driver got out of his car, a man in his 50’s, and told her he was always first and didn’t like others going in front of him. He didn’t seem to care that she was taking a sick child to the doctor, he wanted to be first. He was just a bully.

When you are in you car it’s like you are in you own little world. You can do things, appropriate or not, and often get away with it. In my opinion that attitude will eventually translate to the work-place, home and eventually become the way you are, look at the man who tried to bully my sister. Of course I don’t think all people are like this but I think all people are susceptible to such changes thus society changes. I also see such behaviour on the internet; enabling the ability to communicate things you normally wouldn’t in person and get away scot-free. That man who followed my sister may not have always been a bully in public, but he is now.

I also see this in drivers here. Admitted nowhere near the extent I have seen elsewhere, but I do see it. I know we can’t all be good drivers, but let’s try to be. Who knows it may make for a better future.

法律違反じゃなければいいの？

私は、法律を守る市民として、行く先々で人々の車の運転が気になります。良い運転なのか、攻撃的な運転なのか？慎重すぎるだけか、または、ただ単に本当に悪い運転なのか・・・以前書いた事があるかもしれませんが、私は14歳の時に運転免許証を取りました。その後、仕事の関係で22歳でプロフェッショナル運転免許証（※日本の普通二種免許に該当するもの）を取り、29歳まで使用しました。現在は、日本の運転免許証を持っています。

最近私は人々の運転を見て「社会現象が象徴されているのではないか？」と思うようになってきました。間違いかもしれませんが、カナダの私の町では若い人からお年寄りまで乱暴な運転手が多く、レーサーと勘違いしているのではと思う事があります。
私の姉妹が車でクリニックに向かっていた時の話ですが、車線変更しようとしたら斜め後ろの車（かなり後ろを走っていました）が入れようとしませんでした。それでも、妹は次の曲がり角でなんとか移ろうとしましたが駄目でした。その車はクリニックまで付いて来ました。駐車場で車を止めると50代の男性が降りてきて、「私の前を走られるのがいやなんだ。いつでも一番で走りたいんだ。」と言ったそうです。彼は、病気の子供を連れている姉妹を気にも留めない様子で、まるでガキ大将のようでした。

車を運転していると、そこは自分だけの世界になりがちです。普段はやらないようなことをして、逃げたりすることがよくあると思います。このような態度や考え方は自分の職場や家庭でも表われて、私の姉妹が会った男性のように、結果的にはその人の性格になってしまうのではと思います。もちろん、全員がそうなるとは思いませんが、人々はこのような影響を受けやすく、次第に社会は変わってしまいます。インターネットでも同じような行動がおこっています。普段、直接なら言わないような言葉を書いたりして、とがめられる事はありません。私の姉妹に怒った男性も、以前は人前で知らない人に怒ったりするような人ではなかったかもしれませんが、現在はそうなのです。

日本でも、これ程ではないにしても、同じような目にあったことはあります。全人類が良い運転手にはなれませんが、良い運転を目指しましょう。分かりませんが、将来が変わるかもしれません。
