（Vol.40）　Disposable Japan

From the first time I lived here in Japan (a little over 10 years ago) I got the impression that Japan sees many things in a very disposable way. My first encounter with this phenomenon was then once a month general large garbage day. People chucking out still usable stereos, sofas, kitchen tables, TVs etc. etc., was a little hard for me to comprehend. Instead of questioning it I took some of it home. I was able to score a boom-box and a kitchen table and some other good stuff. I don’t come from the wealthiest background and, to me, throwing out still usable ‘stuff’ was unthinkable. These days are no longer the same as what I described above. Now a days one has to buy a sticker and call to arrange a pickup.

I also see this same ‘disposable’ mentality when building a house. Most home owners in Japan see a 30 to 40 year (tops) lifespan to their house. Then demolition and rebuilding. Or in other cases radical renovations. This is not a common case where I come from, where homes last from 60 to 100 years.

I am definitely not saying that all things Japan are disposable. I also feel that there is a high regard for luxurious and well crafted merchandise. And that merchandise is sold at a premium. On a whole though the average Japanese household, in my opinion, is less inclined to fix something than to toss it and buy something new. Where I come from if it cannot be fixed then it is broken. And, again in my opinion, many things can be fixed with little of no effort.

I like new things as much as the next guy but because my conscience doesn’t allow it, I always try to fix it before I toss it.

使い捨てニッポン

10年くらい前に日本に来た時、「日本という国は、使い捨てが多いのでは？」と思い始めました。この衝撃の現象を最初に目にしたのは、月1回の粗大ごみの日でした。人々は、まだ使えるステレオ、ソファ、ダイニングテーブル、テレビなどを捨てていてとても驚きました。私は、捨てる理由を聞く代わりにいくつか家に持って帰りました。スピーカーやダイニングテーブル、その他、いくつかよいものを手に入れる事ができました。私は、裕福な家庭で育ったわけではなかったので、「まだ使えるものを捨てる」という事が理解できなかったのです。最近では、このようなごみを捨てる際は、粗大ごみシールを買って貼り付け、連絡して引き取ってもらわなければいけません。

この使い捨ての考え方は、家を建てる時にも当てはまるようです。日本の家のオーナーは大体、30〜40年を家の寿命と考え、その後は一度壊して建て直すか、大改造をして一新してしまいます。これは、60〜100年を家の寿命と考えるカナダの風習とは異なります。

日本に関する全てのものが、使い捨てだと言っているわけではありません。確かに、高級なブランドやしっかり作られた物もあります。しかし、そういったものは値段も高級です。私の意見では、日本の一般的な家庭では、壊れたものを直すより、捨てて新しいものを買うほうが普通のようです。私も、直せないなら捨てるしかないという考え方ですが、たいていのものはちょっとした調整で直せるものです。

もちろん、私は新しいものが大好きですが「壊れたものを捨てる前に一度直してみよう」という良心を持っています。
