第3回   面接　その3　質問に答える 【前半】
　 　

英語面接の最初の挨拶と気持ちをほぐすための導入部が済み、
英語での自己紹介が終わると、いよいよ面接官からの質問に答える段階です。

合否を左右する、よくある質問を取り上げますので、
きちんと答えられるように事前によく考え、
回答を練習してから面接にのぞみましょう。

A: Why would you like to work for Acme?
B: Well, I've heard many good things about Acme's products
and services. I've also read on your website that
the Tokyo branch is the most rapidly growing branch of Acme.
It seems to be a company where my skills and experience
could be a positive benefit.
A: I see.
B: I enjoy a challenge , which makes this position
all the more interesting.
A: Do you work well with deadlines and pressure?
B: I can handle pressure and deadlines.
In fact, I prefer to have a challenging workload.
If the tasks I am doing are familiar to me,
I am capable of a high output. If not, I am willing
to give every effort to overcome new challenges.
A: Why do you want to leave your present job?
B: I've enjoyed working for my present employer, but I would like
to move to a position with more responsibility, one where
I can take better advantage of my skills and experience.
Dialog 2 A: Interviewer   B: Interviewee
A: What do you consider to be your key strengths?
B: Well, I feel I have a number of strengths.
For example, I understand that each company
has different needs and expectations of their staff.
I have a wide range of experience
that has helped me develop the flexibility
to adjust to those needs.
I have also gained a wide range of business skills
from working as a temp for many years,
skills that I feel can be applied to this job.
A: Can you give me an example of a previous job
where you were under a lot of pressure
and the results you achieved?
B: In my last position I was part of a team
that made arrangements for an international conference.
The deadline for all the arrangements was fixed
so there was a lot of pressure.
We quickly got organized, making a detailed schedule
and project plan which resulted
in everything coming off without a hitch.
　
　 　
　
　 Why do you want to work for us?
 　
どうして当社で働きたいのですか？
数ある企業の中で、どうしてその会社で働きたいと思ったのか、という質問です。外資系の場合には、Why do you want to work for a foreign company? （どうして外資系企業で働きたいのですか）という聞き方をするところもあるでしょう。また、Why are you interested in our company?（どうして当社に関心があるのですか？）と聞かれるかもしれません。

　 よくある間違い 　
「英語が使える職場で働きたかったので」
"I want to work where I can use my English."
「英語力を伸ばしたいと思ったから」
"Because I want to improve my English."
「留学して英語を身につけたので、その英語力を維持し、さらにビジネスで通用する英語力を身につけたいと思ったからです」
"Because I want to keep up my English which I learnt while I was studying abroad,
and also I would like to learn more business English."

といった回答は、ありがちですが、言うべきではない回答です。

なぜでしょうか。それは、給料を払う会社側の立場を考えていない自分だけに都合のよい答えだからです。会社は学校ではないのですから、英語力を伸ばしたいなら、英会話の先生を雇うなり、スクールに通うべきです。その会社で働きたい動機が、「給料をもらいながら英語が学べるから」と考えている人物を、ぜひ雇いたいと面接官が本当に思うかどうか、よく考えてみましょう。

上記の回答の間違いは、英語をエクセルやパソコンに置き換えてみるとよくわかります。「当社で働きたいのは何故ですか？」という質問に対して「エクセルのスキルを伸ばしたいから」「エクセルが使える職場で働きたいから」「学校でパソコンを学んだので、パソコンスキルを維持し、さらにビジネスで使えるパソコンスキルを身に付けたいと思ったから」と答えた場合、「では、パソコンスクールへ入学したらいかがですか？」と言われても仕方がありません。

こういう回答は、「会社が自分に何をしてくれるか」ということだけを考えている応募者の社会人としての未熟さを感じさせるものなのです。

　 「会社が自分に何をしてくれるか」ではなく、
 　
「自分が会社にどのように貢献できるか」
面接官は複数の応募者を面接します。その中で、「会社が自分に何をしてくれるか」ではなく、「自分が会社にどのように貢献できるか」という視点に立った回答ができる人は面接官に好感を与えるでしょう。

○ ○や△△の過去の経験が、御社の役に立つと思いました。
I thought my past experience of ○○ and △△ could be of help to your company.

私の○○のスキルと、△△の経験が、貴社の事業の発展に貢献できるのではないかと思います。
I think that my ○○ skill and experience of △△ could help expend your business.

外国本社と日本オフィス間の問題に対処してきた経験が、役に立つと思います。
I think my experiences of dealing with problems between the foreign head office and the Japanese local office will be useful.
